How To Relate To Your Pastor

Dr. Mark T. Barclay – Mark Barclay Ministries, Midland, MI USA

The Bible declares that a pastor is a gift from Jesus, the Head of the Church.  “He led captivity captive and gave gifts unto men,” and he gave “some, pastors.” Ephesians 4:8, 11

1.  Receive him as a gift.

It is not enough that God gave him; you must receive him as your pastor.

2.  Know him.

1 Thessalonians 5:12

Know him after the Spirit, so you will receive him supernaturally and can reap spiritually.  If you see your pastor naturally and only follow him in that way, you will miss out.

3.  Esteem him.

1 Thessalonians 5:13

Your pastor is a gift.  You are to esteem him for the sake of his supernatural all to which you submit.  Honor the gift.  If you esteem him highly, there will be no place for criticism, backbiting, or gossip.

4.  Pray for him.

2 Thessalonians 3:1

Pray regularly for your pastor.  This is critical.  The devil attacks this ministry gift in particular because of the influence pastors have over the body of Christ.  If the devil can get the pastor, he has a better chance at you.  Pray God’s Word, and pray in the spirit for the pastor.  Do not pray your will or your thoughts about what he should do; instead pray Ephesians 1:17-19.

5.  Communicate to him.

Galatians 6:6

Your talents, energy, time, and money will help your pastor fulfill God’s vision for his ministry.  Ask, “What can I do for my pastor,” not “What can he do for me?”  It is more blessed to give than to receive.  Acts 20:35

6.  Imitate him.

Philippians 4:9

Follow his example, as he follows Christ.  Paul said to watch and study him.  Remember, he is not your standard rather your example.

7.  Obey his teachings.

1 Corinthians 11:2

Listen to your pastor; he hears from God.  He can save your life if you obey him as a gift.  Pastors are anointed to teach you truth to overcome the things of this world.
